Snapshot London
Audiences London's audience data sharing, profiling and benchmarking initiative. Snapshot London is a powerful audience information tool for the arts in the capital. It records what people really do - not what SOME people SAY they do, using box office data from across London.
Snapshot London is designed to help organisations understand the dynamics of the arts market place as never before providing a "snapshot" of their profiles and behaviour at any one time.
Which audiences?
Over 35 performing arts organisations contribute their data pooling over 8 million booking records, representing around 3 million households and growing year on year. Plans are underway to add new data-sets. Audiences London has also worked on linking projects using similar digital data from 11 local authorities in London. Snapshot is therefore the largest project of its kind in the UK. The data is being analysed as the basis of a number of ground-breaking projects, including those commissioned by Arts Council England, the GLA and a number of regional and national institutions.
How does it work?
Organisations sign up to contribute their audience data, information is extracted regularly from their box office systems and pooled so that it is comparable. Data is then available for analysis as a whole London-wide data-set and by artform providing benchmarks for the sector. Each organisation can then analyse its own information either as a whole, by production/series or by performance/event and see it in the context of the benchmarks and other population information.
A Unique Collaborative Model
Snapshot London is a unique not-for-profit initiative set up to enable the cultural sector to make the most of its audience information. Audiences London are custodians of the information, keeping it safely in the public realm, protecting participating organisations' interests (and those of patrons) while ensuring access for the cultural sector and maximising its "knowledge-value" on their behalf. Those who contribute data always have access to analysis while any income made from the use of its information is put back into R&D.
